BOSTON MA Requirements

As of May 14th 2009 the city of Boston requires all kitchen exhaust cleaning technicians to be certified to inspect and/or clean kitchen exhaust systems.

Technicians will be required to pass a written exam and provide proof of work experience. Restaurants operating in the City of Boston are required to use a certified technician to clean there kitchen exhaust systems. When your exhaust system is cleaned the certified technician must perform the cleaning. They must fill out a deficiency report citing any deficiencies in your kitchen exhaust system. The restaurant owner and the exhaust cleaning technician are required to keep a copy of this report on file. If there are deficiencies in your exhaust system the certified technician is require to send a copy to the fire department explaining these issues.

In addition to this report you will be provided with a color coded sticker which should be placed on your hood. This sticker will inform Inspectional Services and/or the Boston Fire Department that your exhaust system was clean by a certified technician and if there are deficiencies in your exhaust system.
